The Temple of Literature is located on the Perfume River, about 6km west of Hue city center. This is one of the typical works in the Hue Citadel Architectural Complex built in 1808 under King Gia Long.

The Temple of Literature was built on an area of ​​about 3 hectares. To get to the Temple of Literature, from the boat dock, you have to go through three gates: Linh Tinh Mon, Van Mieu Mon and Dai Thanh Mon. This relic is a place to worship Confucius and sages to honor and encourage Confucianism.

Temple of Literature is a historical relic, a unique symbol of our country’s education under the feudal dynasties. The establishment of the Temple of Literature and the erecting of the Doctor’s stele was to respect learning, promote the country’s talents and good traditions of the nation.

Every year, every spring and autumn, the court held sacrifices here. In some years, when the king personally presides over, the sacrifice will be solemnly held. The Nguyen Dynasty ranked the ceremony of worshiping the Temple of Literature in the middle order.

Looking in from Dai Thanh Mon, in the middle there is a great temple to worship Confucius called Dai Thanh Dien. This is the key architecture of the Temple of Literature. However, for many reasons, this work currently only has the foundation left.

On both sides in front of Dai Thanh Palace, two rows of houses opposite each other are Dong Vu and Tay Vu. This is the place to worship the Tien Hien and Tien Nho, who were instrumental in the development of Confucianism.

The two rows of steles at the Temple of Literature include 32 steles registering 293 doctors of the exam, starting in 1822 during the reign of King Minh Mang and finally in 1919 during the reign of King Khai Dinh.

Recently, the People’s Council of Thua Thien Hue province passed a resolution approving the investment policy of the project “Renovating, embellishing, and adapting the Temple of Literature” phase 1 with the goal of preserving and promoting the value of Van Mieu. of a special national cultural and historical relic, a world cultural heritage.

The project has an estimated total investment of nearly 66 billion VND, from the state budget. The project implementation period is three years.

This project focuses on restoring and adapting the entire 830m2-wide main hall of Van Mieu, with brick foundation walls and steps, adjusting the current Thanh stone burial system, the floor is finished with Bat Trang glazed tiles. .

In addition, the project also restored the wooden frame system, roof system, and wooden door wall system of group II, preserved paint. Restoration of yellow glazed tiled roofs, brick walls with three-mix mortar, color basting, and light yellow whitewash. Furniture restoration. Arrange and install interior electrical systems, fire prevention and fighting.

Works at the Temple of Literature such as Dai Thanh Mon, Kim Thanh Mon, Ngoc Chan Mon, Temple of Literature and the marina area are also focused on restoration, embellishment and restoration.

Temple of Literature is a place that often attracts tourists to visit. Many parents also let their children come here to visit and learn about the nation’s history.

Many young people often come here to pray with the desire to achieve high results before major exams.

After successfully restoring the monument, the work will contribute to enriching the architectural heritage of Hue Ancient Capital in general and the cluster of relics from the Kim Long area – Thien Mu pagoda – Van Mieu in particular.
