Ha Giang fair on the first day of winter

The markets of the people living in the Dong Van rocky plateau are a destination for tourists who love highland culture.

Dong Van Stone Plateau spread over four districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac of Ha Giang province is home to nearly 300,000 people belonging to 17 different ethnic minorities such as Mong, Dao, Tay, Nung , Pa Then, Lo Lo… with their own living customs and products. To make it easier for people to buy and sell and exchange goods, fairs are held weekly in the centers of big towns such as Meo Vac and Ma Le.

Minh Thien, a student at the International University – Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, had a long trip to Ha Giang at the end of November and took photos of these markets.

“Favoring simple and rustic things, on this trip, I went to the markets of ethnic minorities to experience for myself a cultural beauty that needs to be preserved,” said Minh Thien. .

Unlike other lowland markets that meet every day, the market in Ha Giang only meets once a week, Ma Le market (pictured) is on Saturday and Meo Vac market is on Sunday.

From early morning, the streets to the market were crowded with people laughing and talking. They all wear their own traditional costumes. Marketers include men and women, children and the elderly.

Ma Le Market is a traditional market with stalls built simply on the side of the road, stretching along a small slope. To go to the market, people have to prepare goods a few days in advance.

People come to the market with only a few pounds of rice, a few bundles of vegetables, bananas, and bamboo shoots. They also often bring textiles, brocade cloths, or self-made agricultural tools such as knives, sickles, plowshares, or carry pigs and chickens under the armpits and bring horses and dogs.

Meo Vac Market is a large, well-planned market. The sales areas are divided into separate lots like in the lowlands.

Especially, the food court here has specialties such as corn tortillas, buckwheat cakes, men men, thang co, au tau porridge…

For the people here, the fair is not only a place to buy, sell and exchange necessities for daily life, but also an opportunity to exchange, meet, cultural activities, creating a vibrant atmosphere for the locals. market place.

The sellers almost do not challenge the price, there is no forced buying or selling. If they don’t sell all the goods, they will collect them back and wait for the next market.

Minh Thien said, for the convenience of going to the market, you can stay at some places right in the center of Dong Van town such as: Dong Van Eco Stone House, Dust homestay, Dao Lodge homestay… or in town. Meo Vac such as Lo Lo homestay Meo Vac, Auberge de Meo Vac, Ong Vang Meo Vac Hotel…
