Taking a break from being a worker, Tran Dinh Nham returned to his hometown of Ha Tinh to start a business by raising Spalacidae. This model helps the mountain boy earn hundreds of millions of dong a year.

On the last day of November, Tran Dinh Nham (30 years old, living in village 4, Son Hong commune, Huong Son district, Ha Tinh province) was busy cutting sugarcane and chopping bamboo for food.

Mr. Nham’s barn is about 150m2 wide. With the herd growing to 200, this guy is the purebred breeder with the largest number in the region.

Nham said, six years ago, he worked as a worker in Bac Ninh. With the desire to get rich in his own hometown, this guy decided to return. But, what to raise, what to plant, that makes Nham anxious.

In 2017, during a visit in Nghia Dan district (Nghe An), Mr. Nham saw that the people here brought high economic efficiency.

Returning home, this guy continued to research on the internet to get more information about this “no-neck” Spalacidae. And, he realized that his hometown has suitable conditions for food sources available for the family such as sugar cane, bamboo, elephant grass, maize, and cassava.

“No one in the area has raised this bat in large numbers, so I risked trying to raise it,” Nham confided.

Thinking to do it, he went to Nghe An to buy a pair of his parents and two pairs to bring his Spalacidae to experiment with an initial capital of nearly 6 million dong.(1$=25,000 VND)

“Although I have researched carefully online about food and how to prevent diseases for animals, I still have risks. The two animals died,” Nham said.

Not giving up, Mr. Nham continued to tinker and learn. Through the time of taking care, he learned from the experience that he should not feed young or old bamboo, cane, or sugarcane. Food should be clean and free of mold. In particular, this animal is hydrophobic, does not like light and high temperature.

At the end of 2018, Mr. Nham prepared the necessary conditions when he proactively declared to the local ranger unit and applied for a license to raise wild animals. Next, he spent 60 million VND to buy 20 pairs of spalacidae to raise.

“I also invested in building a barn on an area of 150m2. This doesn’t cost much. The barn is covered with thatched roofs to keep cool in the summer and closed to avoid cold winds in the winter. A place for each male and female pair to stay and stay. The birthplace is built with large-format ceramic bricks arranged into cells,” Nham revealed.

According to this guy, the pupa has a thick reproduction, 3 litters a year, 3-4

each. After a few years of taking care of him, Nham’s herd has grown to 200.

Successfully raising, he sold 20-30g small bats to the market at the price of 800,000-1,000,000 VND/head; The breed is priced at 3-4 million VND/pair.

When he heard that Nham was successful, many people came to visit, learn and buy seeds to raise. At one point, the owner of the herd in this mountainous region “sold out”.

Because of the low cost of feed and stables, Mr. Nham has a large profit. In 2020, he sold nearly 100 million dong; In 2021, he made a profit of more than 200 million dong. From the beginning of 2022 until now, Nham has also “pocketed” more than 200 million (8.000 USD).

“With money, I can build a house and ask my parents’ permission to let me and my wife live separately,” he said happily.

This guy shared, in the near future, he will increase the herd of deer, raise more deer and rats.

Mr. Phan Tien Cuong, Secretary of the Youth Union of Son Hong Commune, assessed that Mr. Nham’s model of foster care was low investment but very effective and brought high income. However, farmers must pay close attention to the technical stage.

“We are encouraging young people in the commune to learn to invest in raising this animal. We also recommend Mr. Nham to exchange experiences and support initial breeds to help you start a business. Besides that, , we help find capital, expand the model for young people to learn from each other, link livestock and enrich the homeland,” said Secretary of the Son Hong Commune Youth Union.

The bat is a rodent, with a round body, chubby, timid, neckless. They are surrounded by thick, boar-like fur. The eyes are small, bulging, black like a mouse. The delicious and nutritious pork belly is loved by many people.
