HAI PHONG – When it was not yet morning, dozens of people came to Cau Dat street, Ngo Quyen district, waiting in line to buy mooncakes from a famous store.

On the morning of August 30, Manh Hung, 32 years old, in Le Chan district, said he had been at the store since 4 am, waiting to buy cakes according to customers’ orders. When he arrived, many people were already there, even though the store just opened at 7:30 am.

“People who come early can buy many and all kinds of goods, most of them go to buy for customers or shippers. Each cake makes a profit of 10,000 dongs,” Hung said, saying that the bakery stipulates that each customer can only buy twice a day. 20 pieces each time.

To ensure order, the bakery asked people to line up according to the lines. The orders will be pre-written on paper, and given to the staff to save time.

People who buy cakes for the agency to give gifts often arrive later. Ms. Thuy, 24 years old, living in lot 22 Le Hong Phong, came to buy cake at 9am, had to wait more than an hour for her turn. She said she had to go to the queue three times on three different days to buy all the cakes that the company needed.

“People in Hai Phong don’t care which shop the cakes are from, but people in other provinces or partners in Hanoi only like the familiar brand cake of the city, so I have to wait in line,” Ms. Thuy said.

Many people have to wait in the hot sun for a long time to buy. Nguyen Linh, 20 years old on Le Hong Phong Street, said he had to queue for about an hour and a half to buy 5 boxes of cakes for his family. “The mooncakes here retain their traditional flavor and suit the whole family’s taste, so every year I go in line to buy them for my family to use and give to my grandparents,” Linh said.

The fact that too many people gather on Cau Dat Street to buy moon cakes causes traffic jams. The People’s Committee of Cau Dat ward has assigned the police to ensure security, order and traffic safety.

In addition, to serve those who want to buy traditional cakes in Cau Dat without having to queue, some people take advantage of the queue, buy in bulk and bring them near the shops. The price of cakes will be higher than buying at the store about 10,000 VND each.

Cau Dat Street has many famous mooncake shops in Hai Phong. People started queuing to buy cakes from about July 29 to August 13 of the lunar calendar. The price of the cake is from 60,000 to 220,000 VND a piece. Big cakes, especially selling from 650,000 to 2.3 million VND/piece.

Moon cake is a traditional cake on every full moon in the 8th lunar month. The cake is round, and moon-shaped, symbolizing fullness, happiness, and well-being.
