Dien pomelo tree with a single trunk, laden with 400 ripe yellow fruits, for sale for 8000 USD, is a unique product on the occasion of the Lunar New Year at a garden house in Hanoi.

A garden house with an area of ​​3,800m2 in Da Ton commune (Gia Lam district, Hanoi) from the middle of the year has been preparing for the 2023 Lunar New Year season with typical trees such as pomelo, kumquat, mandarin,…

Ms. Ha Huyen Trang, 36 years old, the owner of the garden, said that the total number of pomelo trees in the garden house and other yards is up to 500 trees, mainly for the upcoming Lunar New Year . 

The fruit-laden pomelo tree named “Phuc – Loc – Tho” symbolizes good luck. The tree is 4.3m high (including the pot), the canopy is over 3m wide, planted in a meticulously carved pot. Below the tree is a small landscape of the village garden. 

Dien pomelo tree has a straight trunk shape, the total height including the pot is 5m; the canopy 3.5m wide; There are about 400 ripe yellow fruits for sale for 200 million VND. Ms. Trang said she successfully nursed and grafted this pomelo tree after 3 years. ($1=25,000 VND)

According to her, Dien pomelo usually has small fruit, when ripe, it is red-yellow, the older the grapefruit, the sweeter the pomelo. If the root is younger, the pomelo fruit will be pale, not sweet.

The 400-fruit pomelo tree “shines” in the evening, thanks to the lights wrapped from the base to the canopy.

“Not only do we spend a lot of money, we also spend a lot of effort to polish, incubate, care for and filter out healthy, pest-free fruits,” said Ms. Trang. 

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, 53 years old, from Thai Nguyen, expressed interest in the “super-giant” pomelo trees.

Dien pomelo is considered one of Hanoi’s specialties and is also one of the most sought-after items every Lunar New Year. From the beginning of December, many customers come to gardeners and ask to buy pomelos for garden decoration or as gifts. 

Ms. Trang said that each pomelo tree (from 50 to 100 fruits) in the garden is sold for from a few million to more than 100 million dong, depending on its shape, position, age and number of fruit grafts on the tree.

Large pomelos are often decorated with miniatures by gardeners (garden, house, village pond, …) to create a highlight for the product. 

According to the concept, playing pomelo landscape during Tet will bring joy, luck and prosperity to the homeowner, and at the same time contribute to creating a landscape close to nature. The aroma of ripe grapefruit captivates the audience and reminds the taste of the countryside in the old New Year .

The gardener hires 3 main workers, focusing on watering, wrapping the fruit and preparing to be transported to provinces/cities across the country. 

“Before shipping, we will wrap the net, and stick the tape to fix the fruit during the journey, to avoid shaking or damage,” Trang said.
